Starting to Collect Model Trains

I want to start collecting model trains but have no idea where to start. All I do know is that I’m enamored with the smaller sets. I think they are called N-scale. I’ve seen the name Graham Farish associated with these little trains so I suppose I should start by researching this brand. What things should I know about starting up this hobby? How important is it to have a lot of information before you start or can you just sort of go with what appeals to you and it all works out in the end? I’d like to just start buying what I see but I’m worried about having mismatched things.
