Summer Camp Counselor Jobs

By admin | August 30, 2010

Summer camp counselors are responsible for keeping campers on schedule with activities, settling arguments between campers, making sure everyone is as safe as possible, and leading camp activities. Summer camp counselors lead daily activities, like crafts, outdoor games, musical performances, and so forth, and perform other responsibilities held by regular counselors, especially at smaller summer camps. Themed camps, like computer camps, hire multiple special counselors every summer. A summer camp counselor supervises and manages campers at all times, except during scheduled breaks. A summer camp counselor’s work includes assisting with camper management in classrooms, dormitory rooms, and the dining hall. A summer camp counselor participates in activities such as exhibition games, competitions against counselors from other local summer camps, talent shows, the camp band, and the end-of-the-year musical. A summer camp counselor accompanies campers to out-of-camp events, including camping trips, whitewater rafting, whale-watch cruises, and ball games, and the summer camp counselor is responsible for ensuring that the kids are safe, having fun, and engaged in interesting recreational and educational activities. Summer camp counselors must be high school graduates or currently pursuing a diploma. They should have lots of energy, patience, and creativity and be extremely comfortable supervising, teaching, and managing children. Organization, leadership, and a dedication to one’s work community are all necessary. Applicants must have experience with residential camping programs, working with children, and leading wilderness trips. Leadership experience in school and the community, a background or interest in natural history, and an ecology and/or environment-based education are required for those seeking summer camp counselor jobs.
