Tuning your piano
By admin | November 15, 2008
A piano must always be in tune. If it is not, the pianist cannot play well with other instruments. The tone quality of the Piano will be dull and the intervals will not be consistent. Performers with perfect pitch become irritable beyond reason. More importantly, the played music will not be as good as it deserves to be heard, when the tuning is not precise.
Pianos go out of tune differently throughout the world. Hence, a specific interval in one part of the keyboard may sound more or less out of tune than the same interval elsewhere. Oftentimes, the middle register is inclined to go out of tune more noticeably than the high and low registers. The reason behind this is that the bridges of the middle register are in the center of the soundboard, over the crown, where the soundboard is thinnest and most flexible. The edges of the soundboard are the most rigid, that it does not get affected that much when the middle register goes out of tune.
It is suggested by Piano manufacturers to have your pianos tuned twice or four times a year, depending on your environment. You may ask your technician directly to suggest the most favorable tuning frequency and season to tune your piano, which will best suit your situation.
