The meaning behind cross tattoos

Could there ever be a meaning other than a religious one behind cross tattoos? I’m not trying to be sacrilegious or anything. I just am wondering if the cross stands for anything else in different cultures or if it has ever stood for anything else. I love how the cross looks as a tattoo and the shape of it is perfect for the center of the back but I’m just not sure I want a religious symbol there for the rest of my life. I don’t have anything against religion, I’m just not really into it. Who knows maybe getting a cross tattoo is all I need for more enlightenment.
